JACKSON - Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant named his committee assignments on Friday, and some Democrats who once led prominent committees were demoted.Sen. Jack Gordon, D-Okolona, who had served the past eight years as chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee, was chosen to lead the low-profile Public Property Committee for the next four years.

Sen. Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, was named the new Appropriations chairman. Sen. Dean Kirby, R-Pearl, was named chairman of the Finance Committee, the other group that handles money. Also, Sen. Hob Bryan D-Amory was appointed chairman of the Public Health committee.

Still, Bryant’s overall selection of committee chiefs was diverse, including Democrats, women and black members of the chamber. But most of the top committee assignments went to Republicans.

Sen. Alice Harden, D-Jackson, was appointed chairwoman of the Enrolled Bills Committee, and said she had “no idea what the Enrolled Bills Committee does.”

Harden said she had asked for the Universities and Colleges Committee since she had chaired the committee previously.

“I’m going to do the best job I can,” Harden said.
