JACKSON  – In 1992, Democrats won the presidency with Bill Clinton  and both chambers of the Congress.

Things looked bleak for Republicans.

But two years later, Republicans captured both the House and Senate. A person greatly responsible for the party turnaround was Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who at the time was chair of the Republican
National Committee. On Friday, Barbour said the Republican Party should re-evaulate and “not try to answer all the questions right now.”

He said Republican presidential nominee John McCain was probably the strongest selection for his party, but added “if McCain had done a few things differently” he could have won. He would not identify those
things. Barbour said he thought McCain’s  selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate – criticized by many – helped him.

Barbour also said that he believes “governors will be extremely important in rebuilding the party.”
